Stock Image Licenses

When purchasing images to incorporate into a design, there are two main types to consider: Royalty-Free and Rights-Managed.

Royalty-Free images are not actually free.  Once the image is purchased, the buyer is free from having to pay any future royalties to use the image.  The buyer is purchasing an almost unlimited license for usage from the copyright holder, typically without time limits, for as long as the buyer uses the image within the licensing terms of the agreement.   This type of license is more cost effective than purchasing a rights-managed image; however, the license is not exclusive.  Others, including competitors, may purchase the same image.

When purchasing a Rights-Managed image, the buyer will have restrictions on the use of the image.  Restrictions can include limits such as:  how the image is used; where the image is used; the duration for which the image may be used; and the industry in which the image will be used.  Rights-Managed images are more expensive than Royalty-Free images, but the exclusive nature of the license may be attractive for high-profile advertising.
